Hamilton West v. Hamilton East.

The first of a series of matches between the above teams came off on Sydney Square on Saturday, the following players taking part:—Hamilton West: Gribble (captain), Sage, Bright, Lees, Cowley, Tidd, Moore, Mayoß, Jolly, Jones, MuKenzie, Hume (2), and Murray. Hamilton East: F. Hammond (captain), W. Hammond, Jim Kelly, M. Ryan, O'Neill, Gaudin, Seddon, von Stunner, Peacock, Cassidy, Crosby (2), Quick and Reed. Soon after the kick off, play was transferred to the East's twenty-live, the ball at length going to McKenzie, who essayed a shot at goal, but the ball flew wide. From the kiok-oitt tho ball was gradually rushed to the middle of the ground, where it was for several minutes, the play at times being very fast and interesting. Soon afterwards the East forwards rushed the ball over their opponent's line and Sage was compelled to save. Shortly after the kick out, time was called with the ball near the West's line. In the second spell, the East side had slightly the best of the game, and about the middle of the spell, F. Hammond, who was playing an excellent game, made a good run and secured a try for Hamilton East. The kick at goal, at a difficult angle, was taken by Cnssidy, but no increase to the score was made. After the kick out, the ball was rushed well into the East territory by the West forwards, but W. Hammond and Gaudin soon relieved their side by good long drops into touch, and time was called with tho ball near the West's 2">. For Hamilton East, the Bros. Hammond undoubtedly played the best game, their passing being very good, while Gaudin, O'Neill, von Stunner, Quick and Peacock also did good work. For Hamilton Weat: Gribble, Mayes, M. Hume, McKenzie and Sago played well.
