NEW ZEALAND EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE.

A very successful meeting of Waikato teachers was held on Saturday last ">t Cambridge, to form a branch of the N.Z. Educational Institute. The following teachers signified their intention of taking an . interest in the movement:— Hamilton West, .T. M. Murray, V. E. Gaudin, Misses Hould'aud Barry ; Hamilton East, P. E. Stevens ; Cambridge East, W. S. Stewart, B.A. ; R. Jones, Parry and Miss Macky; Cambridge West, H. R. Hyatt, Misses Dillon and . Nixon ; Rangiaohia, J. La Prelle; Hantapu, J. Ormsby; Whatawhata, G. B. Morgan; Pukerimu, Mr Bruce; Mercor, C. T. Edwards ; Huntly, R. J. Tolbot; Harapepe, C. Kornforth : Ohaupo, B. Bedford; Paterangi, I'\ C. Crookes; Morrinsville, J. A. C. Lamont and J. Miller; Alexandra, J. Collier, B. -V. ; Ngarnawahia, J. Chappell; Tamahero, A. Edwards ; Taotaoron, Clark ; Kihikihi, Christie. Mr W. S. Stewart was elected president, and Mr A. Kdwards secretary and treasurer, and Messrs Murray, ' Hyatt and Miss Hould managing committee. The formal business of passing the rules having been accomplished, luncheon was kindly provided by Mrs Stewart, after which the questions that affect teachers at the present time were very freely discussed. Tho following resolutions were agreed to : — 1. That this meeting records its satisfaction with the statement made by the Premier in the House un Thursday last re tho raising of the school ago, showing that ha has corroctly diagnosed public opinion on this most important subject.—2. That tho payment of teacher's salaries on the 'strict' instead of tho ' working average' presses unduly on the teachers of country schools, and consequently that tho Minister be requested to devise some more equitable method of retrenchment if such bo indispensable.— 3. That such alterations bo made in the scholarship regulations as will make it possible for children attending other than town schools to compete with any probability of succcss, Tho next general meeting of the branch is to be hold at Hamilton, After a vote of thanks to Mr aud Mrs Stowait for their hospitality tho mooting separated.
