At the Board of Education to-day, Mr Goldie preen ted a petition from the Thames Temperance Societies asking that Gewrge Newell Phillips be appointed assistant Teacher on probation. Tho board referred the matter to a committee. It transpired at the meeting to-day that several teachers' salaries had been stopped by the secretary in consequence of neglect to send in some trifling returns. In one case a teacher had his credit injured, he having paid a cheque to Hunter and Nolan, believing that he would have his salary to meet il, and was surprised to find the cheque dishonoured. The board abolished the regulation giving the power of stopping salaries to the secretary. Three months' notice has been given to Mr Garland, the Education Board accountant. The Art Gallery. The Free Public Library and Art Gallery are to be formally opened by the Mayor en the sth March. Sir G. Grey's library has been insured by the City Council for £5000. Racing. The weight Mitrailleuse was likely to receive in the Newmarket Handicap formed a topic of conversation at Tattersal's last night, and some wagering took place over the matter. The great majority were of opinion that our crack sprinter would be apportioned over eight stone, but a well-known metallician maintained that she would receive eight stone or nnder, and backed his opinion by wagering a level fifty. During the evening 400 to 8 was booked about the daughter of Musket for the race under notice. Mr Ballance. It is suggested that Mr Ballance should be invited to givo a public address on the land settlement scheme during his visit to Auckland.
