KAWHIA.
, Kawhia is looking up. Mr Lake, member for Waipa, together with Mr W. J. Hunter and Mr Galvin, paid us a visit. They left here by way of Aotea yesterday. Mr Lake was very much plensed with the appearance of our little town and harbour, so much so that he has promised to return shortly and spend a week in our midst. The natives are all peaceable just now. A great number have left here to work again on the Alexandra road. Tawhiao is still at Aotea. The telegraph poles are now erected halfway across the Aotea beach road. The telegraph men have a disagreeable job trying to float the poles across the harbour at high tide. The natives about declined to give any assistance further than landing the poles on the corner of the beach road next to Kawhia. The Aotea natives don't like the poles being erected, but as yet no obstruction has been offered by them. They pay Kawana (McGovern) is on the beach night and day watching then,. It seems since the telegraph men commenced work on the beach road that Mr McUovern and a mounted trooper ride along every day. No doubt this has a tendency to keep the natives quiet and prevent the pole 1 * from being interfered with.— (A Correspondent, 4th March.)
