A REPLY TO MERCATOR.

TO THE KPITOR. Sir, — "Mercator" complains in your paper of Tuesday, about the scarcity of money, and the difficulty he finds in collecting his accounts, and attacks those who, by selling cheaper than himself, are able to drive a cash trade. He calls them wholeKile hawkers, itinerant pedlars, &c, and generally proposes that the loc.il bodies j should tax them, and accuses them of contributing nothing to the good of the place. As I know that the company I represent is alluded to by " Mercator" in his letter, I ask you in fairness to give me an opportunity of replying, and state here that in paying onr rent and our way in the place we contribute m much in proportion as " Mercator" does. He can do no more, and it is absurd on the face of it to suppose that the man who rents a fchop has not as muoh right to do business in it as if he owned it, and if a monthly trading license ever could be imposed, most certainly " Mercator" and every other business man in the place would have to pay it. If "Mtrcator" would adopt our scale of prices he would doubtless find no difficulty in doing more business, and in getting in his money. As to dead stock being sold, I think that " Mercator," if he is a respectable tradesman, should feel ashamed of slandering his neighbour.*, however much he envies their nuccess. The public have too much sense to be fooled into buying rubbish, and "MercatorV business experience must have been wasted upon him if he hat not found out by this time that a really good Article at a really low price, will alwayi command a ready sale.— l am, fto., J. Mr Jas ODea, arrhitert, Hamilton, invites tenders for the bui'iiny of a six -roomed house near Morrinsyille. Tenders close next Saturday, the 13th inst., at noon. Mr J. S.
