The opening rates have been fully sustained throughout, and competition has kopt active up to the preient, and will probably now hold nut . — until the clip it exhausted. Napjkr. — Tho bulk of the wool is now down from the stations near the coast. On 15th inst. we held our second sale of the ,1'- teaion. The catalogue was the largest yet submitted in the North Island, representing 000 bales, of which 800 were sold under the hammer, and all, nave some 60 bales, have since been cleared privately at an advance (in most cases) on best bids at atfction. Bidding was faiily animated* aod " prices showed a good advance on last sales' ' ' rates. Merino reached 7jd ; half-bred, o <B£d ; cross-bred, Bgd ; Lincoln, 7d. _ Onr next sale will take place about the middle of February, when some 500 or fiOO will be , submitted, principally large dipt of go6d quality. GRAIN*. Dunedin.— Wheat -.—Business in this «'cereal has been quiet, but piice* are gradually improving. Choice milling is worth 2d to 3d morn than at the end <>f last month. Medium is correspondingly ■higher, and chick-wheat is scarce realising up to 33 2d t) 3s 3d, all ex store, bags weighed in ; 2d per bushel extra f.o.b. Port Chalmers, Id nt Uuncdin. Oats :— These have been steadily ad wincing for the List three weeks, not so much on account of • actual requirements as from a speculative turn which had set in. Quotations are up *- to 2s Gd e< store, for stout bright milling : best feed, 2s Id to 2s 5d ; infeiior and medium have been sold at auction this '""Veek at from 2s Id to 2s 4d, sacks weighed %m; Hd extra f.o.b. Port Chalmers, id at 'g^Dunedin. ChuijsTCHUKCH.— Wheat : Prime) hard " winter sorts are most in demand, choice lots bringing M over quotations. Soft winter and Tuscan have moderate enquiry at late rates'. Second quality aie less inquii ed for at 2s lOd to 3s Id. Chickwheat maintains a fit in tone at quotation*. — Oats: Veiy few lines of the new crop have changed hands as yet. Such paicels as yet reached us are in grand order and condition. Prices ha\e haidly steadied sufficiently to be quotable ; but we expect the market to open at about 2s Invekcxhgili,.— -Oats: Since our last report the oxpoits from the Bluff represent ] 0,000 sacks, making about 204,000 sicks Miicj last harvest. Stocks at the Bluff aic now \ciy light, and tho quantity in hand is not great ; it is impossible at this *tage to estimate the shoitage in the growing ciop as compared with last season*, but it i.s ceitain to bo \ery considerable, as tluie can bo little doubt that values will mle higher throughout the Y coming year. Locally nothing has been done in oats dining the mouth, holders refusing to sell. Auckland. — Wheat : Business in this cereal continues quiet. Arrivals dining the month total 3,700 sacks, but the*e are ■wholly millers' ordu*. —Maize: Prices have receded, owing mainly to advices from the Sydney niaiket. Prime milling is scarce, and brings up to 3s 4d f.o.b. sacks extra. Small lota of ; inferior find sale from time to time, but we have not experienced any gi eat demand a* yet for that class. Whole fowl-wheat is worth 2s i)d, but stocks are exhausted. GRASS SEEDS. Gishorxe. — Kyegiaas is now all harvested, and thrashing operations are in a forward condition. The yield, although slightly in excess of anticipations, is con■idprably under last year's supply, and the quantity available for export will be short of former seasons. The seed has been saved in good condition and is of excellent quality. Considerable quantities have come into store during the last week, and a fair business has been done at prices ranging from 5s 4d to Gs per bushel, being on the average about Is per bushel Hlv>\e last year's rate«. There has been a good deal of local speculation, and many parcels have passed out of Hist hand*. New Piamou ni.— Cocksf.>)t promises to be of unusually good quality, owincr to the dry season ; the area under crop is smaller than usual, and many acres of grass for seed have been destroyed by tire. rito/Kv aikw.
