Cameron, alias Barlow, hanged himself in the lock-up last night. The prisoner was being taken to Masterton to answer a charge of obtaining money by false pretences. It appears he took a strap which he had previously concealed on his person, and fastened it to the grating of the cell, and then slipped his head through the noose. A son of his was sleeping in the cell with liini, but knew nothing of it untill awakened in the morning. An inqueit will be held. HOKITIKA, Tuesday. His Excellency the Governor, accompanied by Major Jervois and Mr J. D. Lance, M.H.R., arrived by coach from Christchurch this evening. He was met twenty miles off by the members for tho district, and the Westland County Council, and at the town boundary by the mayor, borough councillors, and a number of townspeople. Wednesday. _At a meeting of the University Council, the question of Dr. Salmonds ap* pointment to the chair of moral and men* tal philosophy came up. Mr Stout, Minister of Education, wrote, suggesting that the Council, Synod, and Church boards should unite to secure legislation to alter the present system of appointment. A motion was submitted that the Council decide to proceed further in the matter of Dr. Salmonds election, and also a series of amendments to the effect that the Council caanot assent to the appointment until satisfied that the person appointed is under their control, and that a sub-committee be appointed. After discussion, the matter was referred to a committee, the general opinion being in favour of the amendment that, pending legislation, the Council should defer com* mitting themselves as to Dr. Salmond'a appointment. A motion was carried that in future the term of all professor's ap* pointed should be for five years. WANGANUI, Wednesday. It lias been definitely decided that the New Zealand Rifle Association's Meeting shall be held at Aramoba about three miles out of town.
