[by telegram.— press association. I Wellington, Monday. Mil T. \V. Glover, the temperance lecturer, arrived in Wellington yesterday by the s.s. Tongaiiro, to fulfil a threo years' engagement with the Temperance Alliance of New Zealand. Sir William Fox and Mr A. Levy, secretary of the local branch of the Alliance, went on boird and welcomed Mr Glover and Ins family to New Zealand, and agreed that Mr Glover should go on to Auckland to assist the temperance paity in the foithcominsf licensing elections, as it is considered important that Auckland should be assisted to maintain the position it has now attained over the liquor traffic. Sir Geo. Whitmore accompanied the Hou. Mr Bullance, who left for south thih afternoon. At the inquest of young Pres«, killed by a dray passing over him at the South Road, a verdict of " Accidental Death " was returned. \t the annual meeting of the Wellington Gas Company, the capital and balancebheet were adopted, and a dividend of 25 per cent, was declared. The charge of embezzlement against Frank McDowell, has been further adjourned until to-morrow. Messrs Ballance and Richardson leave for the South this afternoon. Th« foimer will be absent three weeks, and the latter a fortnight. Mr Tole leaves for Auckland on Friday, and will be absent about a month. It is understood that New Plymouth has applied for prison labour from Wellington, to be engaged on the harbour works there. The bookmakers deny the ntateinent that they offered to purchase Nelson for £4000, and offer to subscribe £100 to the Wellington hospital if it could be proved they did.
