Suicide of a Young Woman. —On Friday afternoon, at Guy's hospital, Mr Langham held an inquiry as to the death of Elizabeth Cavender, aged 20, daughter of a vestryman, living at 10, Union-road, Old Kent-road. Tho evidence showed that for some time past the deceased had appeared much depressed, but when spoken to on the subject declined to say what was the matter. On the 27th ult. she admitted to a female companion that a few days previously, having had a few words with her young man, she soaked a box of paraffin matches in some water and drank the liquid. She said she did not know at the time what she was doing, but that she was now sorry for what she had done. She was taken to the hospital, where she remained until Monday night, when she expired, death being ascribed to the effects of phosphorous poison. A young man named Clarke, who kept company with the deceased, denied that he had any quarrel with her. The day she took the poison she wished him to go for a walk with her, but as it was wet he refused, and she went home. They were good friends, however, when they separated. A verdict of " Suicide while temporarily insane," was recorded.
