CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. In consequence of the misunderstanding between the employers aud employes ia the boot tiadc, some 300 operatives of all branches of the trade have withdrawn, from work. The men's grievances are that too many boys are employed, to the detriment of the adult bootmakers, and that some men were given piece-work and overtime, while many others were out of work. At a conference between the Manufacturers' Association and a deputation frem the men, it was agreed that the proportion of apprentices to jurneymen should be one to four or five, and the employers recommended that a deputation of clickers should wait on them to discuss the proportion of apprentices in their department. There is a probability of the whole difficulty being amicably settled.

WELLINGTON, Thursday. G. Y. Shannon, Captain of the Wellington Rifles, is gazetted Major in the New Zealand Rifles. Information Mas received to-day from the quarantine station that Miss Welchman, the young lady who arrived by the Huiunui stricken with typhoid fever, was much worse. Dr. Johnson and Captain Rose went off to the island. The doctor reports that Mis 3 Welch man it altogether free from fever, and has been so in fact for seme days, but that the ten* dency to consumption, with which she lias been affected for some time, has developed into unmistakable phthisis, and she is now in a very precarious condition.

FALMERSTON NORTH, Thursday. N. Higgins, with several aliases, was sentenced to three years, with hard labour, for stabbing and wounding at Otaki, on December 23. Theie were thirteen previous conviction*! against him.

HOKITIKI, Thursday. The Bank of New Zealand shipped to* day 4429 ounces of gold, valued at £ 1 7,700. The Governor w ill pay the West Coast a short \isit, arriving there on Tuesday night. He will probably be accompanied by Admiral Tryou.

DUNEDIST, Thursday. The Elderslie takes 25,083 carcases of mutton from Dunediu. She has already 19,820 on board. Mr Justice \yilliati)B, on reading Sheriff Watt's affidavit, and he was satisfied that the alleged miscarriage in the panel cute arose through circumstances over which the Sheriff had no control, viz., his own illness and ill-health and the absense of his deputy. It was therefore unnecessary to take further action.
