A special meeting of the board was helil at the office on Tuesday evening. Present — Crs. Fcinell (chairman), Berry and Tnstiam. Tiie annual balance-sheet (amended) and abstract of accounts to Slsfc March were laid by the tieasurer befoie the meeting, and after a careful examination, approved. Under the head of " lates recoverable but not received " appeared an item of £7 9s, which was chiefly made up of small sums due by absentee ratepayeis.

GnhY and Atkinson Streets. —The boaid decided that the conti actor be notified that he must complete his contract to their satisfaction before his woik can be passed for payment.

Maori Dous. — A letter was received fiom W. Thompson, requesting the board to make tl,e Maoris pay the tax or keep their dogs away fiom the townslnp. Tlie chairman said he had cau&ed a tianslation of the "Dog Registration Act, ISSO," and its amendments of 1882 to he made re.uly for circulation amongst the natives. He thought the board in dealing with the matter make no distinc tion between the European dog and that of the Maori ; consequently notices in English to the same effect should be posted up <it the same tune by the registrar. He had learned that the nathes wcie very sensitive on this point, and he felt certain that vety few of them, if any, ■would pay the t.ix ; consequently the registrar w ould have to get the assistance of the police to destroy the dogs. He instanced the case of the chief Llewi, who, soonor than pay the five shillings applied for, at once parted with his dog.— The Cleik stated that some of the business people of the town were desirous that the n,iti\ es horn a distance, now attending the Land (Join t, should not be irritated by the destruction of their dogs, and that another ratepayer said they were useful in de\ouun<r the otFal round the native camps. — Cr. Beny admitted that the town was over- run with them, but he thought it advisable at the present juncture not to enforce the act for their destruction. — Cr. Tiisticim endorced the last speaker's opinion. After some discussion, fuithcr consideration of the matter was postponed.

A\ Application". — An application was received fiom a latepayer for permission to erect a wire fence tlnee feet on to the road, in order to grow a live fence on the inside. — O. Berry said he would not hUe to see barbed wire used for fences on streets. — (Jr. Tristram considered any other wire useless to protect gardens and other propeity. — It was decided that the clei k asci tain the description ot the wiie to be used.

Strict Committees Report.— The Street Committee appointed at l.ibt monthly meeting gave in their report of the estimate of works proposed during the cm lent year, appending thereto the nature and description of the works indispensably necessriiy to be made in the principal thoroughfares and suburban roads. A memo was received from Mr Sandes, stating his inability at present to furnish an estimate of the cost of cutting down footpaths, &c.

Strklt Lkvkls. — The chairman stated that, however dcsiious the Board was to ha\ c the levels of all the streets in the town lived as soon as possible, they must, he thought, for the present at least forego their intention to do so, as the cost of s.\ me front one year's revenue, would leave bi'L a small margin for ro.id works which were absolutely necessary to keep the trailic open, and lie did not think it advisable under exi&ting circumstances to strike a higher r.ite that 9d in the £. Cr Tristram believed that a great deal of dissatisfaction prevailed on account of the deep gradient made by the County Council iv Lyon Street Cr Beny endoised the geneial opinion on that point. After some discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Cr. Berry, that the Mes>sis Tole be engaged to fix the levels of the following streets ; beginning at Ye Awamutu road, from thence along Lyon street to Whitmore street, along that street to Rolleston-street, and along that street and Galloway-street to the Pct-otHcc. Regarding the deposit of earth in Gallo-way-street by the County Council, the meeting decided as follows: — "That as this board arc informed by their chairman that at the request of the Wai pa County Council he attended a meeting of the council at Ohanpo on the 13th inst., and that at the meeting Mr W. H. Grace, a member of the council stated : Ist. That a letter of the 28th April, written by Mr Farrell as chairman ot the Kihikihi Town Board, and addressed to the chairman of the Waipa County Council had not been written with the authority of all the members of the board. 2nd. That Mr Grace then and there questioned the right of the board to make the application contained in that letter." — Resolved that a statement embodying these facts be laid before the Waipa County Council, with a request to be informed whether the council endorse the statement of Mr Grace.— lt vas also resolved that a reply in writing to the letter, bearing date of 28th April, be requested from the council. This concluded the business.
