London, Jannary 28. A fearful hurricane passed over England, and caused an immense destruction of property, the havoc in some places being complete. Numerous wrecks occurred on the coast, and it is feared that some loss of life has resulted. Fears are entertained for the safety of the ship City of Lucknow, whic'i was in collision with the ship im'a. Reports are current that she has beeu sighted off Deal, but the statement is not coufirmed. January 28 (evening). The ship City of Luck now has arrived safely 'it Gravesend. All who were on board the Simla have been saved. A Press Association message says :~ The survivors from the ship City oF Lucknow alleue that it was while attemptiug to avoid another vessel that the collision with the Simla took place. A later despatch «ays :— The remainder of the orew of the Simla have been landed at Dunkirk (France). After the collision an attempt was made to tow the Simla into port, but without success. Among her cargo was £4000 worth of i ironwork for the Sydney Government. January 29. The ship Simla, which was in collision with the City of Luckuow off the Needles, did not sink after being deserted by the crew, and is now being towed to Gravesend. A serious catastrophe has occurred on the Mersey, resulting in the wreck of the steamer Juno. Twenty-five passengers and crew were drow.icd. Caiho. January 28. General Gordon started to-day for Khartoum to assume the governorship of the Soudan. A Proas Association message says:— Gordon Pasha has left for Khartoum without an escort. He takes £33,000 in gold.
