Tuesday. At the aunual meeting of St. Matthew's Church, Bishop Hevilte made reference to some anouymous correspondence which had been going on in the Press, which he said gave him considerable pain, as he thought annual meetings were the place to discuss such questions, but he ielt sure the views expressed were not those of the majority. He was unable to report any progress towards making St. Mathew's a cathedral church. The revenue for the years was £930, and the expenditure £12G0 showing a deficiency of £330.

Wednesday. The Synod last night carried by a large majority an overture of the Dunedin Presbyteiy to memorialise Parliament to amend the Education Act, so as to allow daily bible reading during school houis. At the gaol this morning, John Newton, who was convicted at the recent criminal session, of criminal assault on a child, received the 25 lashes with the cat, which formed pait ol his sentence.
