pedoes. London, January 18. The 'sum of £200,000 in gold has been withdrawn from the Bank of England 'for Australia, and it is expected that further withdrawals will shortly be made. A special despatch to the Press Association states :—The sb. John Elder took 100,000 sovereigns, and the sb. Mirzapore 300,000 sovereigns, for Australia. A despatch of the 19th is as follows :—: — The heavy gold exports to Australia ii stiffening the money market, and the secrecy attempted to be observed about the matter has produced unfavourable comment. It is inferred that the Australian banks have run short of gold owing to the operations of the new loan agencies. The Union Bank of Australia (Limited), and the Australian Mortgage Company, have each shipped 200,000 sovereigns, and the total withdrawals of gold for Australia has reached the most unexpected amount of one million. Tlie homeward mails, via San Francisco, dated Auckland, December 12, were delivered to-day.
