OUR NEW RAILWAY LINES.

TO THE KOITOR. Snt. — You may remember that owing to the absence for a week of Mr J. B. Wiiyte, M.H.11. for Waikato, we were deprived of that week's pleasure of knowing the contents of a telegram from tlm Prime Minister, informing the public tli.it the railway from Hamilton to Thames and Cambridge would be completed as far as the first four miles of the contract (I suppose to near Capt. James Euncim.in'b farm) within eight weeks from the acceptance of the tender. That being on the 23rd November leaves, if I count coriectly, one week and 4 days for completing the work from this date. When in Hamilton on Friday, the 4th, I confess that I could see no signs of progress, but possibly the Public Works authorities are just hanging by to show how much they can accomplish in a brief time, and shame unbelievers. Still 11 days, including Sunday, does seem a marvellously short time to finish the four miles even with all the zeal and energy for which the Government of New Zealand is ho remarkable in the completion of public works in these parts. But if the work is not completed, or worse, not begun, what | could the Prime Minister mean by that telegram? Did he know anything about what he was piomUing? Haa he any power as Prime Minister to keep his | promises without permission from the P. W. Department, or does "the tail wag | the dog^ ?" or did he think he might safely play with a constituency \yhich has always been &o loyal to his Ministry. I present him with a choice of dilemmas. — I am, &c, Will. Auchd. Murray. Piako, 7th Jan., 1884.
