The Standard says that the colonies, havingiliinited their demands to certain Pacific Islands, they should insist that over the remainder England should maintain the policy of the Pacific, with a right to exclude all disturbing elements. The Morning Advertiser stromrly supports the decision arrived at by the Uori-^ ference. The Pall Mall Gazette hopes that Mr Childers will infuse into his colleague, Lord Derby, some of his own spirit of sympathy with the demands of the Australian colonies. The Spectator says that the proposals of the Conference are such aa to startle Lord Derby, and even try the nerve of Parliament, but they are reasonable, and if a strong Australasian feJeration is established, England must annex New Guinea, and it will compel Prance to respect the New Hebrides. It' is the rles* tiny of Australia to rule the Pacific. The Economist thinks it unwise to proclaim a Munro doctrine when Australia is unable to hold the Pacific against aggression.
