Cambridge New Year Meeting.
.Vr a meeting of the stewards of the Cambridge Jockey Club, held on Wednesday, •he programme for tho New Year's Day Meeting was arranged. The programme, is will ba seen by our report of the meeting .vhich appears in another column, consists >f a Hurdles of £20, a Handicap of £30, a Maiden Steeplechase of £15, a Trotting liace of £L 5, a Publicans' Purse of £25, and x Consolation of £10. It is generally understood that the New Year Meeting is purely a disti ict one, the prizes being reasonably ■-mall, which not only ensures, a good show for district horses, but does not m.iko the meeting clash with the Auckland meeting of the same day. The last New Year^ Meeting of the Cambridge club is universally grauted to have been one of the most uiccessful ever held on the course, the attendance being exceptionally large, and the racing good and interesting. The occasion being a holiday, no one finds it inconve-, nient to attend ; and, consequently, the attendance is thoroughly representative of. Waikato people, and the races_ of Waikato hor&es. The programme is a very good one, though we think the stewards might not have stinted themselves u> another £ 3 on the Maiden Steeplechase, which is generally the best and most entertaining event of the day. The Trotting Race should bring together a large field of competitors, as has been the case on previous occasions ; and from what can be gathered the Handicap will be a thoroughly representative field, and will be taken part in by the best blood of the district. A totahsator will be on the ground for the accommodation of the betting public. It will also be seen host our report oi TueS' day's meeting that the stewards are about to carry out extensive impiovoments to tho grand stand and course.
