KIHIKIHI. Meeting of Natives at Tokanui.
A meki'ino, which, however, could hardly bo called lepiesentative, was held at Tokanui on Tuesday last, for the information iogaiding which I am indebted to Mr Grace. The meeting was called by Hopa and others, to discuss the result of the late interview with Mr Bryce. Rewi and Wahanui, though invited, did not attend. Hopa opened the proceedings, by .stating what had been done by Mr Bryce. He said he w.inted to siuvey the laud within the bouudovy — that is land over which he has a claim — before the external burvey was made. Hauauru said that he held back because he loved Tawhiao, but now that the majority have decided he would agi cc with them. He agiecd with Hopa that everyone bad a right to deal with his own ; the gioat chiefs had agreed to the survey, so there could bo no objection to anyone doing 1 as ho liked. He would go to Tawlnao, and .say farewell to hit. laws. He sympathised with Tawhiao, but it was willed otherwise. He would go and .see him for the last time. Several natives, all belonging to the Ngatimatekoie tribe, followed, all speaking in favour of adhering to their child (meaning Tawhiao), but the member^ of only one tribe spoke in thin strain. The majority aie in favour of agreeing 1 with the action of Row i, Wahanui and the otheis. As they arc willing to let the survey go on, the otheio will be powerless to pi event it. The real fact is many of the natives atteuded for the sake of the big feed usual on such occasions. The tender for the new school ha*- been accepted. Mr Burns, of Alexandra, is the successful tenderer. We aie determined to be gay heie at Ohii-itmas time. There will be spoiti on Bo\ing Day, which should bring a good attendanco if the weather is fine. — (Own Correspondent. )
