MAKING MONEY FAST.

Thi: Cambiidge Races on Wednesday weie blessed with a new-chum in the "make-your-foi tune" line. We do not me.in that the individual refened to was a novice in his profession ; indeed he was an adept, but pei sonally ho was new to the Cam budge public, and the money-making medium which he inti oduced was cci tainly a novel one to the aveiage race-meeting goers of this district. The races had baiely begun when our friend, by dint of the verbosity for which the genu.s is deservedly famous, succeeded in getting a ciow d of eager faces, with open mouths, staling eyes, and distended nostrils aiouudhim, having elevated himself on an eminence, possibly in the belief that his imposing figure would be the means of attracting a still laiger assembly. His bell having ceased ringing, the appeal - ance of his hoarort, being now sufficiently alluimg, he waved a huge pile of bank notes, with an air of tiiumph, before the eager gaze of those about him. Aftei bespeaking their earnest attention, he informed them that "if theie is a man of coinage amoung you who will give mo 18s, I will in leturn give him one of these £1 notes." Heie was an opportunity to make money, certainly, and befoio long there weie many "men of courage" about. Several pound notes w ere given in exchange for ISs, Envelopes were then offered for sale at 2s each, but the buyer always got 3s as a present. Brass and steel chains were next .sold, at a compaiativtly high figure, but the buyeis always got the purchase money back with something added as a present. It never seemed to occur to the audience that the man had come ainongot them to make money, and they had never seen such a philanthropic follow on a racecourse ' before. Beautiful watches were next offered, and the man who had the courage to give him £2 should be lewarded with one of those valuable articles, and a piesent added. Men of courage there were, and within a short space of time about twenty were disposed of, some courageous individuals buying no less than four of them. In this case the money was not given back, and the present consisted of a brass ring. The real value of the watches was soon discovered, but not until a large nuniber of them had been disposed of. Dissatisfaction was soon prevalent, bargains were repudiated, peremptory demands were made for a return of the money, and this not forthcoming, the philanthropic man was mobbed. An exciting scene ensued, modest imprecations floated around, sanguinary threat* issued from all quarters, men whose countenances had beamed with satisfaction a few minutes ago now flashed with lage. Our friend drew his " little fellow '' which " wo Americans carry," but the little fellow was not so effectual in soothing the ruffled feelings of the customers as imagined. After disgorging about £10 of his ill-cotton gains, police protection was claimed, and the matter ended.
