J. LANEY'S LONG STANDING GRIEVANCE.

TO TIIU KMTOR. Sir,— ls it not time that some of our influential agitatois set to woik, «iii(l seek some little recompense for the political assault committed by a native about nine years i\no against J. Liney, whereby the said J. Laney's health ami prospects have been uuncd for life? I have known Lancy for tiie last 16 years as one of the most inoffensive and respectable woikinj? men in this or any other district, and also as one ot the best voikmg men in Waikato np to the time of the attack upon his life ; but since that time Laney has not, and will never again be able to do a day's hard woik, in iact his life has been a blank from that day — dragging out. a subsistence by growing vegetables and selling water cresses — because it is light work that suits his shattered constitution. ( Let it be known that Laney was in the employ of Mr E. B. Walker when he received the blow that ruined his life. Has any attempt ever been made to get some little recompense for Laney ? Yes, one or two of his fellow .workmen have worked fi uitlessly in getting Laney to petition the House 'of .Representatives for some recompense, but the members entrusted with the petitions h^ve always been very indifferent, ami laid them before the House as Mr J. Sheehan, M.H.1?,., did with the last one, simply saying that he presented a petition from one James Laney, without any remarks or recommendation— better never ha\e presented that petition. Even in the nineteenth century one is apt to believe that it requires a golden key, a few spccial> pleaders and a strong outside agitation to obtain the recompense that Laney should receive. I have nerer consulted or talked with Laney upon this matter, but, Sir, I think ifc a grievance worth of your pen and" support. — fours, &c.,, * ■ , < " Farmer.
