ALARMING EARTHQUAKE SHOCKS. [BY TELEGRAPH.]

Ciiiustchurch, last night. — Our corres-pondent-wires : One of the most severe shocks of earthquake experienced here since IS6B, occurred shortly before 8 o'clock this morning. The vibration continued about 45 seconds. No serious damage occurred. It is reported a small piece of ornamental moulding was displaced from the cathedral spire, and fell on the asphalt pavement, making a deep indentation. Greymouth, last night.— Our correspondent wires : Two very sharp and distinct shocks of earthquake were felt at 7.33 this morning. The iirst shock and vibration came from seaward, proceeding from west to east, and the second from north to south. Both lasted between 20 and 30 seconds. Houses were visibly shaken. No damage was done. Some shocks were felt at Ahaura, the telegraphic report describing them as "fearful." It was also felt at other parts of tlie West Coast, Ashbuhtoh-, yesterday. — A Press Association wire reports : A very sharp shock of earthquake was felt here this morning at 7.30. It lasted about 20 seconds. The shock was preceded by heavy rain. It passed from east to west. WejsTPORT, last night. — An Association wire l'eports : Three distinct shocks of earthquake of more than ordinary force were experienced here ; also at Lyell and Charleston at 7.34 this morning. TiMVitu, last night.— An Association wire reports : A distinct shock of earthquake, lasting some seconds, was felt here at 7.30 this morning.
