ASSAULT, &c., AT CAMBRIDGE.

Victor ,0-iunvili.k M r as oharged on summons at the R.M. Court, Cambridge, yesterday, with having on the 26th ult., assaulted Mr E. Hewitt by catching hold of him by the coat collar and striking him. He was also charged on a separate summons with hayuig used abusive, language, |for all which complainant in addition to the usual penal conclusion asked to hive accused bound over to keep the peace. Mr Beale appeared for prosecutor, and Messrs Hay and Speed for defendant. The circumstances of the affair as given in evidence by complainant were these : Witness in his capacity of a member of the Town Board had a. coinplaint made to him against accused for a nuisance caused by him in front of his premises. He called on defendant and' finding him from home communicated the object of r his visit to his (defendant's) wife.' Some time afterwards accused met him on the street and charged him with having insulted his wife. Witness denied having done so, whereupon Granville called him a liar, and making use of filthy language threatened to break every bone in his body. He also jostled witness across the footpath and prevented him from passing. During the altercation accused, got hold of complainant by the coat and struck at him. On a subsequent occasion when passing along Duke-street in company with a friend he met accused and the bad language was repeated. He had reason to apprehend further violence ,at the hands of defendant. In cross-examination witness denied having used abusive language to defendant's wife, or having threatened to pet her fined for the nuisance. Witness had a stick in his hand, but he did not raise it into a threatening- attitude. Plaintiff's evidence ,was corroborated by Mr A. Isaacs. Defendant's version of the affair was that in meeting complainant he had accused him of having snubbed his wife, telling him at the,same time that if he had any complaint to make it should hare been to him. He also admitted having said that 5 if " he ever insulted his wife or any other^espectable woman in the place, he would" smash hid nose." Complainant; then brandished hid stick in a threatening way. In cross-examination ] witness said Mr Hewitt did not strike at him, although he wanted him to do so, so that he might have had an opportunity of " handling him properly." He only admitted having pushed complainant away /md calling him a contemptible hound. Two witnesses, named Rhodes and Arner, corroborated defendant's version of the affair. Counsel having addressed the Court for their respective clients, the charge of assault '-was dismissed^ with costs, and a fine of £2 and costs imposed for the abusive language, in default 14 daya' imprisonment. , -
