THE NATIVE MEETING AT HIKURANGI. [BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH, OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Alexandra, Yesterday.
Thehk is now a lurere assembly of natives here with continual fresh arrivals ; now estimated to be quite as numerous a*j the attendance at Sir George U-rey's meeting held h«re s«ino years since. An immansa pile of food was divided on Saturday, consisting principally of dried fish, sharks, preserved pork* &o. Potatoes are th 3 only exception, j.ill else being repugnant to European tastes ; the smell itself being more than sufficient to satisfy the strongest stomachs. No cattle or pigs have as yet been killed. The names of the following 1 tribes, with their numerous hapus, were called out in the divi*ion of the food : — Rarawa, Ngapuhi, Ngatiwatia, Nairentuaha, l\iuranga, Ngaiterangi, Kotoruj, Ngaterakawau Wanganui, Parihaka, Wehfc Coast tribes Lower W«ukatos, Ngatimaniapoto and others. The West Coa*t tribes only were uuable to diVide their shai c without a scramble which ■was most amusing; the poik fat being plastered over the eyes. Tawhiao on -welcoming the arrival of Lower Waikatos, said he had frequently called them to come and reside ac Hikurangi, now they must make up their minds. Te Wheoro jumped up and said here is Waikato, yon can now have us all with you. Tawhiao keeps very secluded, only Te Wheoro, Wahanui, Hauauru, and Ngakau being allowed into his quarters. There vvi I be little done to day as they are not all settled down yet. Te Kooti's crowd is her*, and keeping very quiet. Rewi has not arrived, I believe he is not expected
