Fire by Lamp Explosion. The house of a plasterer named Westbury, at Whangamarino, was burned down through the explosion of a kerosene lamp. Umnsuied.

Embezzling Government Moneys. New Plymouth, Last Night. In the Supreme Court the case of Wilkinson, charged with embezzlement of Government money at Havvera, occupied the whole of Saturday. About 9 o'clock at night the jury retired, and at 11 intimated they were not likely to agree. Judge Richmond said he would return to Court at 12, when he would consider whether he would lock them up till Monday morning. At 12 o'clock, there being still no sign of agreeing, the Judge dismissed the jury. The same charge will again come on.

Hunt Club Season. Chklstchurch, Last Night. The Canterbury Hunt Club open«d its season on Saturday. Between 60 and 70 equestrians were present. Three hares were killed.

Resignation of Mr Masters, M.H.E.. Glreymouth, Last Night. Mr Masters, M.H.R., has sent in his resignation to the hon. the Speaker from Melbourne. He explains that his medical advisers say that for him to attend the coming session in hit present state of health would cost him his life.

The Capitation Allowance. Wellington, Last Night. The Government have issued a circular to the Education Boards, stating that no capitation will be paid on children under five years ot age.
