HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A special mekting of the Couucil was held on Tuesday evening, to consider the report of the committee appointed to inspect aud report upon the Borough endowments applied for by Mr S. Davis, and the terms and conditions of leases. There were present— His Worship the Mayor, Ora. Peat, Hill, McGarrigle, Price, and Vialou. The committee reported that the Borough solicitors had not had time to complete the conditions of the lease, and they were therefore unable to bring up a report. The leasing of the Borough endowments applied for to be put up by public auction was considered and discussed. Cr. Vialou moved, "That lots 30, 31, and 32, Hamilton West, be offered for lease by public auction for the term of 21 years ; and that lots 282, 283, 343, 345, 347, 349, 351, 353, 355, 357, 359, and 361, Hamilton West, for a term of 40 years, with.a condition to fence within a given time." The motion, not being seconded, lapsed. Cr. McGarrigle moved '• That all sections of the Borough endowments applied for up to the present time, be offered for lease by public auction for 40 years." This was seconded by Or Price. Cr. Hill moved as an amendment " That in the opinion of the Council it is not desirable at the present time to lease any of the Borough endowments for a term of 40 years." He thought that looking at the present financial depression, it was very injudicious to lock up the Borough lands for such a long penod as 40 years. He did not think that any of the Councillors present would care to offer any of their property for unreserved sale at the present time, Cr. Vialou in seconding, strongly supported the'views of Cr. Hill, and impressed upon the Council the necessity of carefully husbanding their endowments, as they might look forward to their being » source of considerable revenue at no distant period. The mover and seconder of the motion urged that unless long leares were given, lessees would not be induced to" invest money, in the shape of buildings &c, on the property, and spoke strongly in favour of the motion. . " '• j On being- put to the Council there voted for the amendment, Crs., Hill,Vialou, and the , Mayor ; against, 1 Crs. MoGarrigle, Price and Peat. .
