Cricket Match at Cambridge.

The return match between the Cambridge and Hamilton Cricket Clubs was played in the Government paddock, Cambridge, on Thursday, and again resulted in a victory for the latter. The weather was fine, not too warm, and admirably adapted for cricket. Two of the best men on the side of the visitors — Messrs C. S. Stafford and J. B. Smithwere unable to be present, while the Cambridge team was in like manner deprived of the assistance of Messrs Kilkenny and Martin. The Hamilton team were captained by Mr «F. Wood, and Mr Mackintosh commanded their opponents. Mr S. E. G. Smith umpired for the visitors, and Mr B. D. Stewart performed a similar duty for Cambridge. The rain which fell the previous night had done considerable good to the pitch, which was in very fair order, though perhaps a trifle uneven. Mackintosh winning the toss, sent his men to the wickets, Fitzpatrick and Cotton being the first to face the bowling. The former made 15 before he was bowled by Wood, but the latter was unfortunate, and saw his timber fly when he had only made a single. A. W. Pearson quickly put 12 together, when he fell to the same bowler ; and Mackintosh, after slowly scoring 10 by careful play, slipped the ball into Wood's hands, off Gleeson, who was trundling most mysterious balls. Stubbing, who followed, commenced by hitting to leg for 2, and followed this up by a succession of free hits to different parts of the field, quickly running up 17, when he stupidly went outside his ground, and allowed Forrest, at the wickets, to knock his bails off. 0. E. Pearson made 4, and the rest added very little to the score, the innings closing for 77. G-leeson and J. Edgecumbe were the first to handle the bats for Hamilton, but the latter was quickly disposed of without scoring by Cotton. Gleeson. however, played carefully, and had made 21 before Pilling at point, after several good attempts, held the ball as it flew in his direction. Meacham was caught behind the wickets for 2. Forrest, N. Hunt, and Percy made 3 each, N. Hunt and Wood only a single each. Things were beginning to look bad until Tonks and Palmer got together, and then the runs began to come pretty freely, the former making 12 before being caught by Hinton off Mackintosh, who had relieved Stubbing. Beauchamp then joined Palmer, playing freely, and running up a score very rapidly. Palmer having made 16, was caught by Stubbing, leaving Beauchamp, not out, with 13. The total made, with 4 extras, was thus 82. After partaking of a hasty luncheon in the tent, the Cambridge men again went to the wickets, but none of the scores, with the exception of that made by C. E. Pearson, who was the only one to get into double figures, are worth noting, the last wicket falling for 39. Hamilton thus wanted 35 runs to win, and Wood very wisely sent Beauchamp and Palmer to the wickets. They at once commenced to run up the score, the fielding of the Cambridge men being anything but good. Beauchamp had put 5 together, and Palmer somewhat more, when the former's wicket fell to Cottop. Tonka joined Palmer, who was playing splendidly, and between them they ran the score up to 35, the number required. They did not cease play however, until Tonka was caught, no more runs being added to the score. In reality, therefore, Hamilton won the match with 9 wickets to spare. The bowling on either side was fairly good, but the fielding was not up to the average. During the afternoon, a large number of people, among them being a large proportion of ladies, visited the ground and appeared to take great interest in the proceedings. At the conclusion of the matoh, the usual cheers were given by each team for the other, and a pleasant day's sport was brought to a close. Appended are the scores. CAMBBIDGE. First Innings.
