In the House of Commons, Mr Gladstone made a statement regarding the position of affairs in the Transvaal, and announced that, with the view to bringing about a complete cessation of hostilities and a permanent settlement of the difficulty, a Peace Commission be appointed in the Transvaal, to undertake negotiations with the Boers. Five hundred thousand cattle have been lost in the United States and Canada through intense cold. Traffic was suspended on the Pacific Railway by snow-Slocks. The Continental and American Press sympathise with the Boers as an oppressed people fighting for liberty. In Mesapotamia the population are dying in hundreds by a plague. Small-pox is causing great havoc in Honolulu. ' Welsh Land Leaguers have left for New Zealand, to organise subscriptions for the League. ' ' , It is probable that a number of Alpine Clubs will visit New Zealand to explore its mountains. General Colley's , foody has been recovered., -
