HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL. Installation of Mayor.

An adjourned meeting of the Council was held at noon yesterday for the purpose of installing the Mayor for the incoming year. There were present— Cra. Hill (in the chair), Knox (Mayor elect), Davis, Peat, and McGarrigle. The Town Clerk read the advertisement, notifying the election of Mr Knox, and also copies of letters to and from the Colonial Secretary on the same matter. Mr Knox having made the statutory declaration, took the chair, vacated by Cr. Hill, as Mayor of Hamilton. Cr. Hill, on behalf of the Council, congratulated His Worship, and referred to the distinction which had been conferred on him, an honour which was the greater, , because there waa no opposition. H^

felt confident the new Mayor would fulfil the duties of the Office with credit, and give as much satisfaction as his predecessors. His Worship the Mayor thanked Cr. Hill for his kind remarks. He had ju^t returned from a journey of seventy miles, and was too tired to speak. Ho might Hay, however, that it was with diffidence he had oome forward as a candidate. He would do his beat for the Borough, and if he was supported by the Council, he felt sure his rfiideavours would be for good. He crusted they would work harmoniously together. (Hear, hear). It having been agreed to write to Mr Seddon, requesting him to meet the Council on Monday, at 7 p.m., regarding the question of his land, the Council robe. Those present, including about a dozen of the more prominent burgesses, were then invited by the Mayor to partake of refreshments. Cr. Hill asked the company to fill their glasses to drink the health of their new Mayor, and in doing so he took occasion to refer to the questionable conduct of certain of the Councillors in purposely absenting themselves from the meeting on the two previous days. The toast was drunk with great heartiness. The Mayor, in responding, said he would endeavour to work with the Council, and he hoped they would all let byprones be bygones. (Hear, hear.) He thanked them very much for the honour they had conferred upon him. The company then separated.
