TE AROHA. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

Steady work still continues iv all parts of the field but there is no material alterations in the prospects most of the claims which have been opened up buffieiently are engaged in getting out quartz for a trial crushing in sufflcieut quantities to aftord a veliable test, as to the payable nature oi the ground. The result of these tri.ilb will be anxiously watched throughout the country, and should they prove satisfactory a large increase of population will flow in immediately from all parts of the colony. I have been shown letters for the West Coast which htate that a very large rush will set in from there, as soon as the richness ot the ground is established. Business men too from all parts have been here lately iv search of locations aud it has become necessary for the Warden to enlarge the area of the business part of the Township which has been done by absorbing the large paddock in front of Lipsey's hou>e all .he frontages in which, as well a> iv Bridge street were immediately taken up. There is a good deal ot speculation in this, several gentlemen having taken a large number of licenses and pegged off tideb for surely speculative purposes, bus the largest number have been taken up ™\th the dona fide intention of building should sufficient inducement offer. Very little more however, will be done till after the holidays mos-t of the Waikato and Tharne • people having- expressed their intention of returning home next week till the commencement of the new year when steady work will be resumed aud let us hope carried to a successful issue. With re _ aid to the Claims there is nothing very important to report. In the Pi o -.peelers, or aa it should now be called the Te Arohi, Gold Mining Company, work is being pushed steadily forward. The drive is now in about 45 feet aud another lode shewing gold has been uncovered at the bottom of the winze. In the United work has been resumed. In both drives in the Te Aroha No 2, situated North of the Prospector* Claim, Davis and party have struck a likely looking leader at a distance of 22 feet from the mouth of the drive. No gold is visible at present but from the indications the proprietors are very sanguine of success. Gold is still seen in the Morning Star leader, and the result of their trial crushing will be watched with interest. In the Bright Smile, the men are busily engaged in breaking out five tons of quartz for shipment to the Thames. It is a laborious i undertaking when the nature of the ground over which the men have to pack the stone is considered, and they deserve credit for the pluck with which they are, carrying it through. The All Nations McConnachie and party, report they have struck gold, and I intend to visit their mine this morn.ng. Three new claims have been pegged out as follows : — dune* and party, Id men's ground, to the buuth of and adjoining the Morning Star. Jamieaon and party, 10 men's ground, Wairongomai creek. Queen of Beauty, Smith and party, 12 men's ground, on a spur south of the Projectors.' The weather here for the last week has been very uncomfortable for men under canvass, indeed it was almost impossible to keep under it at all, the tents shewing a strong inclination to go prospecting across the Thames Valley on their own account. On Saturday and Sunday it rained almost incessantly, and on Wednesday and Thursday it blew a gale such as is rarely felt in New Zealaud, and even those who were accustomed to the "winds of Wellington, were forced to admit that the supremecy of that district in this res- < pect, was iv danger, A large amount of I

dumagre wa~> done ; a great number of tents were split to ribbons, and heveral buildings in course of erection were much injured. New bu i »ines-.c > 8 are springing up on fill hides, unionist the Litest of .which is tint of Mr Kug" Hiird^ser, of Hamilton, who is erecting his S iloon in the centre of the Township, and who, by the by desires me to st ito in answer to the local iv your las>t is-aie that he h.is not deseited hi.s patrons in Hamilton, but intend*, to secwe the services of an acomplihlieil arti->te for their benefit, but as ho many of hi-, fri nda h.id come out here, he could not do less than make arrangements to attend to their requirements. The Warden held a Cow t here ou Wednesday last, at which a number of disputed claims to business sites &c , were disposed of, the decision in nearly every case givinjf satisfaction. The next C -urb will be held next Wednesday, at which the remainder of the disputes now pending 1 , will be settled. Friday December 17th.
