SPORTING.

Waikato Turf Club's Summer Meeting. TtfE Waikato Turf Club have issued their bill of fare for the Summer Meeting, which is to take place on the Ohaupo racecourse ou Thurhday and Friday, 1 7th and 18th February next. A mere glance at the programme, whioh Hppears in another column, will at ouco convince those who delight in a couple of day's really good racing that the officers of the Club have worked with a will, and left no stone unturned to enrich the stakes to that extent that large fields and well-contested events may be looked for. The total amount of the stakes is £500, and the events include a Turf Club Handicap/of 100 soys.. and the Waikato Derby of 150 soya. These are, indeed, liberal sums to be given away, and when we consider the dulnpcs of the times and the scarcity of tho "needy,"' the members of the Club are to be congratulated upon the quality of their catering for the amusement of the sporting public of Waikato. The committee have, with commendable pluck, endeavoured, by lessening the number of the events and proportionately increasing* the prizes, to attract a better class of horses to Waikato, and I have no doubt they will be rewarded. The only thing that remains now is for the new goldfield to turn out prosperous, and should it. meet with that suocess whioli it now promises to do, the Club need have no fear an to the attendance. I sincerely hope that the summer meeting of 1881 will oreate a new era in the annals of the Waikato Club's Racing- Calendar. Blub Gown.
