THE WAIMATE BOUNCE. Trial of the Maori Prisoners.
[BY TELEGRAPH, PRESS ASSOCIATION.] New Plymouth, Thursday. Sixty-fivk prisoners were eharsred this morning at the District Court, with uuUwfulfy obstructing the free passage of a thoroughfare at Pungarehu, on the~4th of September. Mr. Standish, Crown Prosecutor, with Mr. Samuel, appeared for the Crown ; Messrs. Halse and Roy for the prisoners. After counsel had addressed the Court, His ' onor summed up, and the jury retired to consider their verdict, and after remaining- absent about thrae-quartere of an hour, they returned into Court with the verdict of guilty. His Honor sentenced the prisoners to two years' imprisonment in the Lyttleton gaol, aud to find a surety in the amount of £.50 each to keep the peace for cix months after the expiration of the sentence. He also told the interpreter to tell the prisoners that the lea«;Mi of their sentence depended upon how the natives behaved themselves.
