WAIMATE PLAINS. ( PRESS ASSOCIATION.) ( PER ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.)
I Hjlwera Yesterday. The fatigue party of Constabulary started work this Morning, marching from Otakeho to Kakarakea Bush in order to take up that work at the point they had reached when making the road formation for the late camp at Kaipuni. The Otakeho is an improvement on the late camp, being freer from dust.
THE ROYAL COMMISSION. The Commission held their first sitting for actual business at Hawera. About 50 Maoris turned up, and are now taking their turns before the Commission. These will occupy the Court at least a couple of days. Other natives are expected tomorrow or next day. Messrs Brown and Parris, from their intimate knowledge of native matters along the coast, and indeed of almost every individual, are of great service to the Commissioners, who themselves seem to be pretty well acquainted with the past career of most of the notable men, the natives occasionally in the course of giving their evidence saying " You know all about these things."
