About the end of May the Chilian fleet . bombarded three Peruvian ports, doing great damage. The Chilian admiral, while blockading Inique, lifted tho submarine cable, to maintain communication with his Government. Inique was not much damaged by the bombardment. Mollunrlo, and the district around it were also bombarded, and m"eh railroad property destroyed. Pisagua was demolished. The Chilian force
| went ashore m boats, and was repulsed by the Peruvians. The vessel Admiral Rogers of the United States navy was shot when the attack began, and a flag carried away. Admiral Rogers telegrahed the .Chilian Admiral of the mishap, who apologised. He bombarded the town, leaving it m ruins. All the shipping appliances at the guano islands were destroyed. England remonstrated, and sent Admiral de Horsey to protect British interests. His flagship, the Triumph, an iron--clad, visited San Francisco on its way south. She is of 6800 tons register, 4982 horse-power, carries two 12-ton guns also four 6 .-pound guns and six small breech.loading guns.
