BLENHEIM, Wednesday.
FLOODS IN THE SOUTH.
The heaviest flood experienced for some years occurred here on Saturday and Sunday. Almost the whole lown was under water, varying m depth from oto 7 feet. There were no services m tho churches yesterday, except m the Catholic church, which is situated on high land. To-day the town presented a deplorable appearance. Fences are down, footpaths are washed away, and debris strewed about. It is reported that a number of sheep have been drowned. Qn account, o

WELLINGTON, Monday. The long-standing claim of Mrs Meurant gainst the colony has at last beeu settled. Ilie Native Minister forwarded to Auckland the £2000 voted by Parliament. Ihe sum is to be invested m trust for Mrs Meurant's children. Tho trustees are Mr W Swanson, M.H.R., and the Native Minister for the time being. . The -.Hutt nomination took place today, Mr Henry Jackson and Thomas Mason were nominated. The ahow^r#t\ hands were m favor of Mr Jackson $y '- 20 to 9. Jhe poll will take place. _3h Wednesday.
