HARAPIP.
January 17, 1579. The late rain has improved the look of the crops in this district very much, as everything was beginning to look very brown' and withered. If the drought had lasted a week or two longer, tho pofcatoc crop would have been a failure ; as it is, I think it will be anything hut a firstrato crop, throughout the district.
The Government have sent up a surveyor (Mr Stephens) to survey a road through the land that is to be Hold by themf formerly intended to be given to the King natives. The line of road between here and Alexandra is to be altered, as, at present, it is too close to the Waipa river, and the consequence is that when the river is high tho creeks are flooded, and the bridges are all under water, stopping all traffic on the road until tho river falls.
The most exciting event, and topic of conversation, is the proposed bridge over the Waipa. Some are for having it over a. mile from To Roro, and others are in favor of I'eßore. Tho latter is the most common sense view of the matter, I should say, as Alexandra is the nearest town to us,, where ..telegraph office is, money order office, r v, .tor, stores, and the road from «» there to ttn>nlace should be made as short as possible.—Own Correspondent.
