THE NEW RAILWAY TARIFF.

Sib,— May I call public attention to the tariff of charges on New Zealand railways as published in the ' New Zealand Gazette' of January 3, 1879, and signed by J. Macandrew, Minister for Public Works. I will simply draw the attention of the railway authorities to Class M: Live Stock, which is as follows:—Cattle in truck loads, for distance of not more than 10 miles, Is Gd per truck load per mile ; more than 10 miles, not more than 50 miles, 5d per mile; more than 50 miles, not more than 100 miles, 4d per mile; more than 100 miles, 3d per mile ; minimum charge, 15s per truck. Result:— 5 miles at Is Gd, 7s Gd; 10 miles at sd, 4s 2d; 40 miles at od, 16s 8d; 50 miles at 4d, 17s 4d; 95 miles (Ohaupo) at 4d, £1 lis 8d; 100 miles at 3d, £1 ss. Comment is needless. I observe that the sarne scale of charges and mileage is adopted in Classes A, B, C, D, E, F, and H. As I am greatly interested in Class M, I will let others criticise those classes in which they are most personally concerned. —I am, &c, Ohaupo.

[Our correspondent forgets that the minimum charge per truck is 15s; consequently, the charge is a uniform 15s from one mile up to thirty-six miles. By-and-bye, when there is a station at Te Awamutu, Ohaupo settlers, who are so much nearer Uickland, will be able to save 6s 8d per truck-load by driving their cattle nine or ten miles up country to a station beyond the 100 miles distance!— Ed. W.T.]
