Equal and exact justice to all men, 01" whatever state or persuasion, religious or Dolitioal. * # * * ♦ Here snail the Press the People's right maintain, Unawed by influence and ;;nbtibed by gain. THURSDAY, JANUARY 16, 1879. FJR.OPOSEC HOSPITAL FOR WAIKATO. The Waipa County Conncil, the other day, when the sum of ,£llß was deduct 'd from tbeir shave eft he Government subsidy as the county's half-yearly contribution towards the maiv.tea.4nce of the Auckland Hospital, very naturally considered the question, whether by a united effort on* the part of the four counties, and the Borough of Hamilton, a public hospital might not be established, and m a laiye part, if nob wholly maintained by their several enforced contributions to the Provincial District hospital, from which m return, the Waikato districts receive little benefit. It waa resolved to write to the three other Waikato Counties, Haglan, Waikato and Piako, and to the Hamilton Borough Council, asking their co-operation. In the meantime, the Hon. Mr Sheehan, while m Waikato, was appealed to, and, evidently from the telegram which we publish below, was favorably prepossessed with the desirableness nnl feasibility of the proposal. With respect to those features of tho question, we shall have more to oay on a future occasion, at present merely publishing the telegram, which has siuce been received by the Chairman of the Waipa Counfy Council : — From the Hon. Mr Sheehau to the Chairman, Waipa County Couucil. Grahanistown, Jan. 13, 1879. Jin proposed hospital m Waikato, m reply to the questions put before me by a deputation at Te Awamutu three or four days ago, I have much pleasure m informing you that Government will gladly assist m the erection of the hospital. The ordinary rule is to contribute one-half of the cost of erection, but, if the matter is fcake.n up at once and m a business-like spirit, wo will contribute two-thirds. As to maintenance, the rule is, as I mentioned to the deputation, we pay pound for pound for all monies which you raise, either by voluntary subscriptions or rates, or both. Ido not think you should have much difficulty m raising your portion of the building fund, and I feel assured that many of jour influential settlers would not only contribute to the cogt of building, but also subscribe a sum annually towards maintenance. Please let me know as speedily as possible what action is to be

taken, Whoa you havo settled the quos* tba of ijito, 1 will let you knotf about hospital buildings at NgaruavVahiai— * (Signed) Jons Sheehas. — -♦
