WAIPA ELECTION.

The following document having been extensively circulated in the Waikato, we take the earliest opportunity of giving it wider publicity : "The following important telegrams respesting the Waipa Election appear in the ' New Zealander' of this morning, i ; ,-* "Auckland, July 4th, 1878. " ' " WAIPA ELECTION • ' [From otta Auckland Special.]

"Great commotion over the Waipa Election. Mr Whitaker, one of the candidates, whose paper, himself, and supporters are never tired of .-abusing the Premier; and now as an enemy in disguise, Mr Whitaker professes to support the Government, but if he is returned if is well known he will be a bitter opponent .to Sir George Grey. Mr Whitaker has been engaged with his friends for a long time undermining the late member, Mr Cox, until at last they induced him to resign, and all the time'they were getting promises of support for Mr Whitaker on the strength of his being a friend of Mr Sheehan's. Mr Whitaker even paid the expenses of an Auckland reporter to go to the e WaikalOi so as to get full reports published here to throw dust in the eyes of the Waipa Electors resident in and about Auckland. A large proportion of names appearing on his requisition were obtained by the representations of his canvassers that Mr Whitaker .would be a Government supporter, many of those who signed are now so disgnßted that they have declared for Mr McMinn. Mr William Graham (who is engaged purchasing native lands for Mr Whitaker), Major Jackson, Mr John Runciman (Government. Sheep Inspector), and others, are spreading private rumours, -specially detrimental to Sir George Grey, with a view to. help Mr Whitaker. "The Government giving Mr McMinn, the Grey candidate, their support, Mr Whitaker's side ai'e now awfully funky, and wiring to all sorts of persons asking, for help. The contest will be close, but the belief of those who are well-informed is that Mr McMinn will win. There are. nearly forty natives on the roll, besides some ninety votes about Auckland. The Government should appoint a nearer place than Newcastle as a polling booth for the Electors resideut in and near Auckland. Mr McMinn is under a great disadvantage, in the Auckland and Waikato papers showing an unwiliingncss to oppose Mr Whitaker. Every day's delay now with tho Election will help Mr MeMrax.

"Mr Whitaker's .side are now making an arrangement (o get throe Auckland men to go to the Waikato fo try and woo any waverers from their party ; this is coming dov?u with a vengeance considering' the recent bounce of Ml- "Whitaker's supporters. Major Jackson and others have just re'urned to the Waikato from a " feeling " mission on behalf of their man.
