[advertisement.] CRAIG Y. MACFARLANE. To the Editor of the New Zealand He^hald. SIR,— In giving my evidence in the Suprcmq£7ourt, on Monday last, to Mr H"«keth's questions, 1 said to him, "You and your firm ha\e done all you could to rum mo by keeping tho deeds of my wife's property in your office for over one year and nine months without registration, and by conveying the best port ion to J. S. Macfarlane without my knowledge." Mr Hesketh denied it, and challenged me to provo it. I accept the challenge with all my heart. The particulars are as follow :•■ — On the 20th May, 1870, Mr Lascelles, solicitor, made out a deed, at my request, conveying four farms to my wife, Sarah Craig, when I was all right and out of debt and worth over £20,000 all clear. I signed the deed in Mr Lascellos' office on the 27th May, 1870, in the presence of Mr J. Burtt, as trustee. Mr Lascelles having to go to the Thames to manage Mr R. Graham's estate, called with me at Messrs Hesketh and Richmond's office, about the beginning of June, 1870, and handed Mr Richmond the deed, in my presence, saying, " I have searched the Registry Office and found all correct ; yon have nothing to do but register them." I went to the Registry Office yesterday, and had the deeds in my hand, and found they worn not registered till the 27th March, 1872 — just one year and tenmonths to a day. In the month of March, 1872, my son, Hugh Craig, when he saw how things wero going to ruin, asked his mother how much property she had. She replied, " I have the two allotments corner of Grahame and Hardinge streets, conveyed to me in 1866, and the farms at Tauranga." He said, " Are you sure ?" His mother replied, "Your father conveyed them to me." Hugh Craig made enquiries in March 1872, and found the farms were not registered. He enquired the rea«on. Mr Richmond said, " I have no money." Hugh Craig there and then gave him £5. I have Mr Richmond's receipt for the same. To show the untruthfulness of Mr Richmond's reply, I state, and can prove, he received in cash £70 in the month of June, 1870, viz., from a native called Rehia, half-brothpr to the late William Thompson, Native King, £50 ; 30th June, cheque Bank of New Zealand, £20 ; 16th July, ditto, ditto, £25 ; Bth September, d'tto, ditto, £24— in all £119. Let the public understand that I signed an agreement about tho 12th July, 1870 i written by Mr Richmond, and signed in his office, and registered in the Supremo Court. From that date lam held harmless from all law expenses whatever relating to the Wangapoa law case. This is the deed referred to when I was conveying in trust to Mr J. S. Macfarlane about thirty farms on the East Coast Tauranga district, along with about four thousand acres timber land. It was in this deed that the best part of my wife's property was improperly included. Among so many deeds I did not notice this one. This is the farm that the generous, liberal, and open-minded gentleman/ Mr J. S. Macfarlane, conveyed to my wife (her own property), when he was compelled by another solicitor. This is the farm that he has boasted of so much to his friends of what he has done, and told Mrs Craig, in his own office, he thought he had done enough for the Craig family. There are more matters I will refer to, and mention them in connection with Mr Richmond's office. When I was about to sign the large deed referred to, 12th July, 1870, I think about thirty to forty pages, it stated it was a hona fide sale. I objected to sign it, and took it away fornbouttwodavs. I showed it to Mr J. Burtt. He said, " You must not sign it in that form." Mr Burtt went with me to Mr Richmond's office. I then said, " I will not sign it in that form." Mr Richmond replied (or words to this effect), "As the' deed is done sign it ; we all know and understand that it is by way of trust : and when you can pay Mr J. S. Macfarlane you will get back your property. 1 will give you a letter to this elfect, signed by Mr J. S. Macfarlane." I signed the deed, but to this day I have received no such letter. Often has Mr Richmond and Mr Thomas Macffar1 J.me said 1 never would h.ivo back the mill. lam satisfied , t'utwas intended. Let youi readers judge. There are j uuny more matters like this, but ] will not touch 'oa tbein .it piuauit. All 1 want fiom Mr J. S. Macfarlane i is-- ami 1 hi\fc demanded it twice through the Supreme Louit — a true account of the books, according the agreement signed and registered in the Supreme Court, and I will pay him the balance, if any. THOMAS CRAIG. July 13, 1873.
