STATUTORY MEETING.

Before vacating Jhe chair at the statutory meeting of the Wallace County Council, Cr W. B. Hopcroft thanked members for their assistance and co-operation. He also thanked the engineer, clerk and staff for the courteous and obliging manner in which they had carried out Jheir duties. Mr W* J. A. McGregor, who was appointed chairman for the ensuing year, congratulated Cr Hopcroft on the in which he had carried out his duties.

Other officials elected were: Chairman of Finance. Committee, Or B. C. Horrell; signing officers, Crs A. Gould, H. J. Pinckney and B. C. Horrell ; representative on Main Highways District Council, Cr W. B. Hopcroft. The ordinary meeting of the council was then held.

Mr H. Popham, Orepuki, applied for the grazing rights of part of Surrey street to Falls Creek from Dudley street. He offered 5s a year. —It was decided that the matter be left in the hands of the member and engineer with power to act. Mr R. Muldrew, secretary, of the Tuatapere School Committee, wrote asking that the footpath be extended to the" northern end of the school ground. He stated that the road at this point was fairly low-lying.—lt was decided that the request be granted. The Automobile Association (Southland) wrote asking whether some improvements could be made to the parking arrangements at Riverton Rocks, as there was considerable congestion every week-end, frequently to the annoyance of property owners. Attention was also drawn to the quantities of rubbish and tins which were allowed to accumulate. It was decided that the • matter be left in the hands of the engineer, in collaboration with the inspector, with power to act. E. A. Carran, Waipango, asked what was being done about the new bridge as only promises had been given over the last four years. The lives of 20 children were risked twice daily in travelling over it to and from school. Also the Waipango road was about the worst in Southland and it, cost ratepayers twice as much in repairs to vehicles as would pay their rates. — Tenders" are being called on receipt of plans back from Wellington approved. D. W. McKay, Invercargill, forwarded plan of a subdivision of property at the Rocks and asked for approval.— Plan approved. A. W. li. Dickson, Otahu, intimated that two years ago a road was promised, but it was still a mud track and he requested that it be attended to. — Contract has been let and contractor to be written to.

Tuatapere Sawmilling Coy. applied for right to haul logs across unused portion of Domain Road, Clifden. — Granted, subject to any damage done being repaired. Macalister Bros., Invercargill, enclosed the necessary document for the Council to approve the dedication of David Street Extension, Ohai, a distance of 21- chains only from Hastings Street and does not give access to the Domain and for which purpose a strip of land would need to be purchased from Mr McKenzie.—Left to member and engineer. E. Moseby, Nightcaps, drew attention to the present state of the .Night-caps-Ohai Road. His bus, which runs daily, has to run on the clay in places to dodge the rocks sticking through the gravel surface.—Road is being attended to.

Fi. P. Healy, secretary, Mossburn Branch of the Farmers' Union, wrote asking that a ranger be appointed for that district in an effort to keep stock off the roads. —The Council does not now approve of appointment of a ranger, the matter to be handled by the traffic inspector. T. S. Millar, chief surveyor, Invercargill, forwarded scheme plan for subdivision at township of Marakura, Extension No. 1 (Te Anau) for approval. —Approved. Town Clerk, Nightcaps, applied for right to take clay from road at new deviation near Wairio —Granted, no holes to be dug in sides of road. Mrs Jane Templeton, Pahia, applied for a hauling licence for a 2-roomed hut, Orepuki, to Pahia.—Granted usual conditions.

Gordon Bros., Nightcaps, applied for an old wooden culvert across Valli Road to be renewed and deepened.— 'Left to member and engineer with power to act.

Mrs E. Feaver, North Otautau, applied for grazing right of part of Swale Street from. unused road hear old slaughter-house, eastwards. —Left to member and engineer. W. M. Barker and Clias. W. Lay, Orawia, requested that some new ditching and cleaning out of present ditches on road leading to their properties to be done as the roadway was affected. —Matter is being carried out.
