Western Star WALLACE COUNTY GAZETTE. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1938. ELECTIONS.

The twenty-sixth General Election was, held oil Saturday, the polling being the largest in the history of the Dominion. The result has been a clear cut victory for Labour, their majorities in the towns and cities' being very sub•stantial. The* National Party, however, gained ground in the country dis"U'icts, which showed that the farming community does not favour the Labour Government. The number of votes cast for Labour was 494,412 as against. 356,054 for the National Party. The Independents, most of whom will iose their deposits accounted for 34,796. Ho far as Southland is conceme'd the ilon. A. Hamilton and Mr Jas Hargest were returned with fair majorities. The iornior's success is the more gratifying as the Government recently placed over 1000 men on public works in the "Wallace electorate. When Mr McDoiigail, 1 the member fo r Mataura changed over to Labour, lie lost the confidence of the /afmers and was decisively defeated by .Vr T. L. Macdonaid, the National can. dii'late. The result of the poll "shows that the cities are • strongly in favour of Labour, and Parliament will thus be in a position to give effect to their demands. Two old members of former Parliaments have lost their seats, viz. Mr Wright, the Independent member for Wellington West, and Mr Kyle, of Riccarton. The hitter is only 38 votes behind, and when the absentee votes come in there- might still be a change in ' this electorate. Th e present state of the parties is Labour 54, National 24, and Independents 2. The new Parliament will consist of 16 new members, thirteen of the sitting members being defeated as follows; —D. Biwues (Labour, Wniliikj); C. ll.' Burnett (Labour, Tauranga) ; H. M. Christie (Labour. Waipawa); T. II en are (National; Northern Maoii); IT. E. ITernng (Labour, Mid-Canterbury) ; K. J.
