BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Borough Council held on Monday evening was attended by His Worship the Mayor (D r Trotter), Crs E. B. Patrick, H. E. Philp, Jno Crawford, A. -F. Webb, J. A. B. Walker and E. S. Fossey. —Correspondence. — Mrs R. Lockheed asked that a block culvert be placed on road leading to her property at Helms ville.—Left to Works Committee, with power to act J. H. Dawson asked that a footpath be formed' fronting his property near the hospital. —Works Committee to report. E A. Henderson wrote r© boundary fence between her property at The Rocks and land belonging to the Boroufih. She estimated the cost of erecting fence at £l4 155.-Left to Property Committee with power to act. National Broadcasting Service wrote stating that the new Southland station would be officially opened by the Horn F. Jones, and extended a welcome to Council’s representative to be present at the opening.—His Worship the Mayor was appointed. Horace Pope asked the Council to put in a drain across the road in front of Sec. 23, Blk 9 with, 4 inch pipes.—Left to committee to draw up a report. < The R.S.A., Dunedin, wrote askmg that the Council give its order for dog collars to the Association. —Granted.. Secretary, Southland Court Committee, wrote asking for a donation towards the Centennial Exhibition.—Cr Walker gave notice of motion that £2O be voted. The Minister of Internal Affairs wrote stating that Arbor Day would be observed in August, and asked the co- ■ operation of the Council and other bodies interested in carrying out tree planting.' Cr Walker said that it was rather late this year for planting but he would ‘ like to see the < embankment in South Riverton planted next year, and to be named the Centennial Avenue. An appeal was received from Wellington asking for funds to help the Chinese refugee children.—lt was resolved that £2 be voted to this fund and £2 towards the Spanish refugee fund. A circular was received re standard-' specifications for sanitary flushing cisterns.—Decided to adopt same. A communication was received from the Canterbury Progress League stating that the need for greater expenditure on maintenance and improvement to our highways was becoming more difficult. Nearly half of the money raised for motor taxation was used for purposes other than roads. It was resolved to urge on the Government to bring about a desired change.—Decided to support proposal. The Southland Hospital Board . forwarded estimates for 1938-39, tb° total expenditure being/£36,787. Cr Walker voiced his opinion about the increase in rates, and the matter will again be discussed at the next meeting of the Council.

The Highways Board wrote agreeing to the Department carrying out the widening of the Bay road subject to the Council finding one quarter share of completed cost of work, including game proportion of engineering fees. —It was resolved that the Council contribute 25 per cent: towards engineering costs. The caretaker of the Riverton cemetery wrote thanking the Council for cleaning up the cemetery. He would do his best to keep it in good order. Cr Webb/said there would be a shortage of spoil for the old railway embank- ■ meat, and suggested that extra soil he obtained from Shrewsbury street. Drainage was required badly in Osborne street as it was a menace to health.' It .was pointed out that labour would be provided"’free of cost and the only 1 exptaise was the cost of pipes. Cr Philp said that if pipes were placed in. Osborne street they should certainly be laid down in Shrewsbury street.’ It was decided to ask the consent of the Unemployment. Department' to employ" labour on these works, and notice of motion was given to purchase the - necessary pipes. ■

It was decided to cany out repairs to the Corporation cottage, occupied by Mr McCallum.

Cr Webb recommended that six posts be obtained for repairing the fence on the recreation ground. The Cemeteiy Committee recommended that the cemetery fees he increased as follows:—Single plots increased from 30s to 40s; double plots increased from £3 to £4 10s; interments from 30s to 40s.— Adopted.

An area was recommended for removing the refuse from portions of South Riverton, and, it was decided that the residents be approached to avail themselves of the service. Cr Crawford recommended that an automatic switch be installed 'for the pilot light. t Cr Webb stated that it could be erected at his residence and he would look after it.—Agreed to. Cr Walker said that five out of seven one-way bridges between Riverton and Invercargill had been broken as the result of motor accidents.—Decided to draw I the attention* of the Main Highways Board to the matter. It was resolved that the services of Mr J. G. C, Baker be obtained to lay off Church street. • It wag decided to hold a*special meeting on Monday next to discuss the water supply for the Borough. Accounts amounting to £277 18s 6d :were passed for payment.
