SUDDEN DEATH

A sudden death took place on Saturday last when Mr Duncan MacDougail, senr., was presumably seized with a heart attack.’ He had intended going to tho races, and whilst walking down Palmerston street with a friend he remarked that he was looking' for a race hook. His companion received something of a shock when almost immediately afterwards he observed Mr MacDougall fall on the asphalt. Medical aid was promptly summoned, but upon examination it was found that he had passed away. Born in Greenock, Scotland, in 1849, the late Mr MacDougail arrived by the Zealandia at Port Chalmers in 1874, coming oat as baker on the ship. Arriving at Dunedin he was engaged by the late Mr J. Blair, of Caversham, and remained in his employ for 15 months. He’then proceeded to Oamaru, where he married Miss Maud Benson in 1876. After following the baking trade for different periods at Ashburton, Timaru, Dunedin, Invercargill, Queenstown, Gore, Wintou, Bluff, Orepuki and Riverton he retired from active work and had been living iu retirement for some time. The late Mr MacDougail was well and known throughout the town and district, was of a kindly disposition and was ever ready to assist those in more unfortunate circumstances. His well known figure will be missed in the streets, and his many acts of kindness will linger long in the minds of those whom lie had assisted. The deceased, who was 85 years of age, was a widower aud leaves a grown up family. Mr Duncan MacDougail (Riverton) is a son and Mesdames Nicol and Whyte (Riverton) are daughters.
