' fiery columns. VOLCANO ERUPTS. DISTURBANCE IN HAWAII. impressive Spectacle. rift in crater floor. HILO (Hawaii), December 2. li: ' Spurting fiery fountains 500.t0 1000 feet in the air along a two-mile rift in the floor of Mokuaweoweo crater at the summit of Mauua Loa, this 13,000 ft high volcano burst into eruption after dormancy since .1926. Lava covering -a square mile of the crater floor late on Saturday was .an impressive sight from an aeroplane flying at an atitude of 14,000 feet. Lava wm flowing like: water fron)-about 200 minor fountains, while one huge one tossed a fiery column high with streams interlacing over the crater floor, but as ye. seeming unlikely tcf overflow and cascade down the mountainside as they ~ did seven years ago .when they destroyed the fishing.-.village of Hoopuloa. From an opening high in the wall of the crater lava gushed forth over old • cones of " concealed lava, cascading IOOt feet into "the pit. As darkness came ,on the glow of the eruption was visible a hundred miles away. Dr Thomas Jagger, the Government volcanologist, is hurrying to the scene from his observatory on the brink of Kilauea. He predicted that as the be ginning of the greatest activity in 30, years

. Mauna Loa, the largest volcano in the world, reaches a height of 13,675 ft. In form it is a smooth flattened dome with a very low gradient and without vegetation within 4000 ft of the summit. Its crater has a diameter of 12,400 ft : On its eastern slope is the volcano oi Kilauea with its crater surface 440Uft above the sea. The eruptions of Mauna Loa have been distinguished for thelarge quantities of lava discharged,, some of the Streams, ,as that of 1880-81, being 50 miles in. length.. ‘ ' HAWAII ROCKED. VIOLENT EARTHQUAKE- ' HILO (Hawaii), December 2. The entire island of Hawaii was shaken on Saturday by a rattling earth--1 quake. The shocks were accompanied -i jjy a seismic disturbance as Manauloa burst into unusual activity. Columns of vapour shot a mile upward from the volcano and simultaneous earth shocks and . seismic .disturbances indicated a flowing of lava within the base of the island: Thero is no expectation of danger and the residents are not excited.

RUSSIAN PARTY’S ESCAPE. MOSCOW, December 2. It is reported that the-change. of wind saved the lives of 92 Russians, including several women,; who were the ' crew and passangers of the Soviet Icebreaker Cheluskin, which for over a month had been trapped in ice-packs in north-west Behring Straits. The rescued include a party of scientists who spent the winter on Wrangel Island. ■' ’The ship took off the party by means of a small- aeroplane, then became trapped in ' the ice as she was homeward bound.
