Western Star WALLACE COUNTY GAZETTE. FRIDAY, JUNE 16, 1933. HITLERISM.

A cable received during the week from Berlin, intimated the passing of a new Genian law aimed at discouraging the evasion of taxation. Any German evading a declaration, o.f property or capital aboard or foreign currencyexceeding one thousand marks is liable to a sentence of from, one to ten years' imprisonment.- Since- the advent of Hitler some very drastic legislation Has been enacted, all in keeping with the programme arranged long before he had loomed large in the public eye. That programme was a very extensive one, and now that he is in a position of responsibility, his original •■■programme' still stands. Roughly, it covered twenty-five,points. These twenty-five points, appeared in the programme- as demands. The enumeration of the points opened with a demand for a greater Germany, equality with, other nations. and-return of colonies. He intends Germany for the Germans, because n 0 one could become a citizen unless of -German blood Naturalisation of foreigners was to be prevented. As a natural corollary, citizens only, would be eligible to vote and to occupy public positions. It was laid down that the first duty of the State was to provide the means of livelihood The immigration of nonGermans was to be stopped. All citizens were to have equal j-ight s and ; equal status. The first "duty of all was to. work. Enrichment through war was t 0 b e declared a crime. AH trusts were to be nationalised. Following the abolition of "unearned" incomes, profitsharing in big business was 'to be made compulsory, and the benefits- of old age pensions were to be extended. Large stores would be .municipalised', and then let to small tradespeople All privately-owned land would be 'confiscated, without compensation, for communal purposes. Traitors and profiteers would be drastically dealt with without distinction of rac e or creed. Roman law would bo abolished m favour of German common- law

Education would h e for a practical' life, and to produce good citizenship according to the G f Hitler. The propagation of political falsehoods by the Press Would be prevented. Paid soldiery would be abolished, A newspaper advocating anything against the commonweal would be proscribed. Religious freedom would be granted to all denmoinations so long as they did not, endanger the. Stats, There are a

number of other demands that whittle' away individual freedom, but in any case individual interest was to be de-clared-subordinate in every instance to common or national interest. As only those of German blood were to be permitted to remain and become citizens, it explains the expulsion of the Jews that has been in progress for some time now. while the abolition of the large businesses is another anti-Jewish demand, as a large number; of these are.owned by members of the Jewish race". Several of the dejnands aw aimed at reducing the whole population to one level with dependence on the State for sustenance in old age. The liberties of the Press are greatly curtailed, and, of course, no Jew could be associated with it. Nob only is the Press' curbed but free speech is only permissible when it is favourable to the Nazi regime. . The Manchester Guardian recently criticised some of the happenings in Germany,' and its circulation in that country was at once proscribed. In one of its May issues that journal said the final organisation of the German State on the basis of a one-party dictatorship seems to be only a question of time.' "Terror remains the basic Nazi method of Government, but i$ is becoming more organised and regulated," stated the Guardian. Roughly, half the pop-; ulation. largely armed and organised, governs the remainder who are un .armed. . cowed, and helpless. The Guardian stated that the concensus of .opinion among German and foreign, observers in Berlin is that Hitlerisir. has every prospect of continuing for .a long time, barring an unsuccessful war, which is unlikely in the -Hear future, because Hitler's extravagant nationalism and rearmament projects have restored Anglo-French solidarity in the West, and his anti-Bolshevik policy has antagonised Russia in the East, and it would be madness for Germany to initiate a war under these conditions. In" the meantime the city of Vienna is doing its best to expel Nazi leaders from its borders
