RIVERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Council, held last evening, was attended by his • Worship' the Mayor (Dr Trotter) and Councillors • Jas. Hymers, A, F. Stock, E. Dennis, C. E. Johnstone, E. B. Patrick and Miss Hunt.

E. M. Bentley made application for a renewal of billiard-room license.—Granted. Applicant to post notice in room notifying that born 18 years or under would not be admitted.

Secretary of. the Riverton and District Progressive League stated that- at a meeting of the League it was suggested that when repairs were being effected to the abridge that a portion be filled in to the cross wharves. The estimatedi cost of filing in was estimated at £BOO. —Resolved that the suggestion be, forwarded to the District Engineer for consideration.

The Progressive League aiso drew attention to' the bad state of the mill section in the centre 1 of the town, and asked the Council to take steps to compel the owner to clear Decided to forward copy of letter to owner with a request to clean up thu section. . . ; '• The Health Department, Duuedin, wrote drawing the*** Council's attention to the insanitary state of the privies at the. end of |he bridge, also at the. rear of the Council Chambers. The urine from the. former privy causes a nuisance over the sand! beneath in warm weather.—Resolved that fresh pans-be placed in some of the privies at South Riverton, and that they be emptied more often-and previous to .picnic excursions coming to the Borough.i-The matter of the privy at the rear of, the Council chambers was left to 'the Sanitary Committee to-furnish a report.

It was resolved that complaints in future must' be made -at the Town Clerk's office, and they will be attendied to.

The Secretary of the' Southland Electric Power Board wrote that the Wird is prepared to instr.uct its Engineers to proceed, at once with*,, the ' preparation of an estimate of reticulating the Borough, bait before, doing so it would require to be notified definitely as to the Council's! final decision on the following questions:—(l) Is it the decision of the Borough'that the Power Board reticulate the power within the Borough bouwlaries, the Board to receive the revenue therefrom. (2) Is it the wish of the Council that the Board should supply..the power in bulk, the reticulation being carried out by the Borough. For the Council's information the Board had been advised that it has no, authority to reticulate an area,within any Borough and then later hand over the reticulation, or sell such, to that Borough. In other 'words, once the Board installs the reticulation! it must remain the property of the Board.—Cr. Patrick said a Committee had met Mr Hihchey at .Riverton and the right had been granted the Power Board to reticulate >he Borough.—Action approved. Decided that the Lighting Committee take steps to .make a canvas .of the Borough for consumers. —At a meeting # the Lighting Committee Or. Stock signified his willingness to canvas the North ward and Cr Johnstone the Smith ward. ,

The Dietrich Engineer, Public Works Department, wrote asking for a reply to? his- memo re bridge repairs.-—Cr. St-ock said he h.idt interviewed the launch owners, who suggested that a span on either side of the jetty be ieU open for motor traffic.—Resolved to forward information accordingly. The Surfaceman's , report for the month was read.—A suggestion was made that some tar 'be procured! for ■repairing the footpaths.—Decided to procure two casks of tar. „ Jas. Reed again waited on the Council iu regard to repairing Milton street. A quantity of broom on the side of the road also required! cutting. —Left to Works Committed to carry out some maintenance work on the road. ef. Jno. Hufft waited on the Council and stated that for three years he had had no access to his property. A quantity of rubbish from, another ratepayer's 'property hadi been carted and placed on the road, thereby making it impossible ( to drive into His property.—Referred to 1 /Works Committee, with power to het. During a discussion On whether a road existed, or otherwise, leadjing to .Mr McGregor's property, Cr. Patrick said there had been a dispute in regard to this road for years pasf.. The Deeds Office recognised! it as a road, therefore the Council could say that a road existed there.

It was resolved to adopt special by laws in regard to the governing explosives act.

It was resolved, to notify the occupier of a property fronting Bath road to cut the noxious- weeds.

It, was also decided to fill, upi a gap in the stone Avail at the west end of the wharf, which had been washed away by the river. The Cemetery Committee Gubniitlef'i plans and,'specifications for the erection of a shed at the cemetery at an estimated cost of £loo.—Cr. Patrick suggested that the matter be held over until after the 31st'March, in view of the proposed legislation being brought down by the Government in regard to local, bodies' ftn-j •nice.—After some further discussion it was reslovcd to hold the matter over till next meeting. Accounts amounting to £.107 3s, Gd were passed for payment, and the meeting then adjourned*.
