NIGHTCAPS NOTES.

Never has rain been more welcome that that which commenced to fall on Sunday and continued! throughout Monday. Springy and - wells which had not been known to go dry before were at their last, and as so many householders were lately depending solely on this service for their water supplies, matters were getting into the serious stage before the rain came. Several of the local sports attended a sale of trotting horses at Wyndhami during the week, but, so far as is known, no purchases, resulted. The meeting called by the Town Board for Thursday night to explain why it was necessary to have a poll of ratepayers, resulted jin the nonaspear a nee of any ratepayers, those concerned evidently having every mith in the Board end being quite content that the matter of raising a loan, for the enlargement of the Coronation Hall be left to them. On Saturday forty ratepayers visited ib* poll, and, 34 voted in favour of the loan and 6 against. The Chairman of the Town Board and Mr D. Sinclair, s enr., visited Invercargill as per arrangement, and, after interviewing the l Mayor, Mr Stead, decided to have a banner for the occasion of the Prince o ! f Wales’ visit with the words “ Nightcaps Welcomes You” inscribed thereon, and exhibited along with the others. The .members of the Board alsowhile in Invercargill took the 'opportunity .of interviewing the chief postmaster and making some suggestions in regard to the plans on which the proposed new post office building should be built. Tlxey received a favourable hearing from; the Chief Postmaster, and were led to believe mat the post office would be an accomplished fact before long. On Friday night, or; to bo exact, at 2 a.m. on Saturday, at Wairio, on die occasion of the spinster’s ball in idio local hall, a raid was made cn Bain’s Hotel. The police officer from. Nightcaps found about 40 persons on the premises, ten of whom were apprehended and their names taken, the rest escaping by jumping out of the window.

In the Presbyterian church on Sunday evening, the Rev. G’. Crockett conducted a memorial service for the late Mr 11. Knox, who had for over 30 years been connected, with the life of the church in Nightcaps, during part of which he filled the position of deacon, and as advancing years prevented him from taking such au active part, he was made .a life member of the deacouate. There wasi a good congregation present to pay its last respects to one who was respected and revered for his uprightness andi integrity. The Rev. Crockett delivered an appropriate address taken from the text, “Jesus wept.” The choir rendered an anthem, “Come Ye Disconsolate.” At the close of the service the Dead March was played by Miss Perry, all standing.. The Rev. A. McDonald, Otaiitau, had purposed being present to conduct An’s service. He had been associated with the late Mr Knox during, the early days of the district, and was well fitted to pay a last tribute to the departed cue, but circumstances prevented him from being present, which he much regretted,. A wedding of district interest was solemnised last week at Invercargill, the contracting parties being Mr Wilson, Timpany’s Siding, and Mrs W. Reed, widow of the late Mr Win. Reed, of Nightcaps. The many .a friends of Mrs Wilson will wish her! health and happiness in her new life. There are quite ;v number of weddings on the beard for the near future.
