WALLACE HOSPITAL & C.A. BOARD.

The ,monthly meeting of the Board held on Thursday, was attended by Messrs Jno. Horrell (Chairman), F. j. Dyer, J. C. Thomson, JS!. J. Stevens, Jno. McNaughton, and T. A. Buckingham. An apology was received for the absence of Mr Johnston. An application for relief was received from a resident of Round; Hill. —Decided to grant temporary relief of 12/6 per week. The Chairman of the Otautau Town Board wrote during the early part of the month requesting additional outdoor relief to a resident of Otautau. —The Secretary reported on receipt of the communication that an extra allowance of 10/- per week had been granted.—Action approved. The Secretary of the Otautau Local Committee now wrote asking that the amount be added to, and suggested another 15/- per week.—The Board considered the request, and during its deliberations it was pointed out that £ls 3s 7d was expended directly and indirectly on behalf of the case during last month.—After discussion, it was resolved that the Secretary visit Otautau and report ai, next (meeting. The Secretary of the Otago Hospital and C.A. Board wrote stating that a resident-of Wallace was an inmate of the Dunedin hospital, and forwarded account to the local board'for hospital fees.—Received.

Acting-Chief Health: Officer, Wellington, wrote in regard to equipment for re-establishing 1 temporary hospitals should an outbreak of influenza occur. Should additional equipment be necessary the Defence Department would loan same.—Receivedi.

_G. Sivyer wrote stating that he had disposed of the late H. Thomson’s effects, the sum of £l6 11s 6d being obtained.—Received.

G. Sinclair -wrote enclosing account against the above estate. —Received. Mrs R.- S. Beaton, Tuatapere, wrote stating that if the Board could not get any application for the position of District Nurse, she would carry out the work, with the exception of midwifery.

Miss Agnes Muir, Invercargill, applied for the position of District Nurse for Tuatapere. She could not take the position until the end of June.— It was resolved that Nurse Muir’s application be accepted. J. C. Summers wrote resigning her position as sister on the staff of the Hospital.—Accepted.

A letter was received from the Matron recommending that the salaries of nurses be increased.* When Sister Summers left she (the Matron) would be the' only trained nurse in the institution.—The matter was left to the Hospital Committee to deal with. • i The Matron stated that the In-spector-General of Hospitals paid a visit to the institution during the month, and recommended that an up-to-date steriliser be procured for the operating theatre, also electrical appliances and washing machine for the laundry.

Inspector-General of Hospitals wrote suggesting that an operation book he started at the hospital, diagnosing each case, the nature of the operation and other remarks.

The Surgeon-Superintendent reported as follows: —Patients remaining from previous month, 20 males, 10 females; admitted during the month, 9 males, 8 females; total under treatment, 29 (males, 18 females; discharged during the month, 9 males, 11 females; deaths, 1 male; remaining in the hospital, 14 rrtales, 7 females ; old men’s ‘home, 5 .males.

Messrs McNaughton and 1 Stevens reported on various -works at the hospital. The installation of electric light was nearing ■completion. In view of the dry season experienced, the Committee recommended making provision for more water for the institution.—Report adopted. Accounts amounting to £574 15s lid were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned.
