Referring to the liigh prices charged; for meat, Major Whyte, at a- meeting of the Hamilton branch of the Farmers’ Union, expressed the opinion that the farmers should open their own meait shops and let the general public have supplies at .a reasonable price. This, he said, would tend toi draw the farmer and the working man closer together—a very desirable consulmmation. T£e believed the fanners should also have their own woollen mills and soap and candle factories. The meeting decided to ’ ask the Auckland Farmers Freezing Company to start soap and candle works as soon as possible. It was pointed out by Ellxcott that while there was a) large increase in the price of soap and caudles the farmer’s got no more for their iat.
