Among the dodges to. which the Germans resort as protection against the bayonet is to stuff their tunics with shirts doth, or anything they can find. The Belgian bayonet is a short, stumpy weapon with a lOin. blade, which buries itself in the padding and fails to reach the body. At any rate, that is -the theory of pa.rons of this device. A Belgian artillery officer stated that several of the enemy wearing these rough-and-ready cuirasses had fallen into the hands of the Belgians-. Most of the Germans of Land, wolir age, and practically qualified for the Landsturm. are so well provided with frontal padding by Nature "that any artificial increased amplitude in his direction would swell their girth to Falstaffian proportions.
